HC Deb 03 April 1969 vol 781 c187W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors there were in the National Health Service in 1968 compared with 1964.

Mr. Crossman

On 30th September, 1964, there were in England and Wales 20,467 hospital doctors and 20,246 doctors providing full general medical services. The corresponding figures for 1968 were 23,376 and 19,970. The 1968 total of 43,346, shows an increase of 2,633 or 6.5 per cent. over 1964. The fall in the number of general practitioners, which had begun in 1962–63, was halted in 1966 and there was an increase of 121 between 1st October, 1967, and 30th September, 1968.
