HC Deb 03 April 1969 vol 781 cc184-5W
Mr. Marten

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what is the estimated cost of the damage to roads in the British Virgin Islands due to the unusual rains and flooding at the end of February; if he will make a contribution towards the cost of repairs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Prentice

The British Virgin Islands Government, which has already planned to use development aid funds for considerable road developments in 1969, has estimated the cost of the damage to the islands' roads at about £20,000. The worst damage appears to have been on Virgin Gorda, and our Development Division is urgently considering a request for a Colonial Development and Welfare grant to replace the badly damaged road linking North Sound with the Valley on that island. The advice of the Road Research Laboratory is being sought on the alignment of this road.
