§ 59. Mr. Darlingasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will seek to amend Section 30 of the Rents Act, 1965 to increase the penalties for unlawful eviction of tenants in furnished accommodation, in view of the growing practice whereby landlords risk incurring the present penalties in order to obtain higher rents from new tenants.
§ Mr. GreenwoodThe courts can already impose heavy penalties where these are called for—up to six months imprisonment together with fines of £100 for a first offence, or £500 for a subsequent offence. These should be an effective deterrent.
