HL Deb 06 November 1968 vol 297 cc349-50WA
THE EARL OF MANSFIELD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the weekly cost of maintaining a prisoner or detainee in:

  1. (a) an Ordinary Prison,
  2. (b) Borstal,
  3. 350
  4. (c) a Detention Centre,
  5. (d) one of the Special Hospitals provided for persons suffering from mental disorder.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, HOME OFFICE (LORD STONHAM)

The latest figures readily available are those for the financial year 1966–67. In that year the average weekly cost of maintaining an inmate of each of these types of establishment, excluding capital and maintenance costs of buildings and any apportionment of the central costs of the departments administering them, was as follows:

England and Wales Scotland
£ s. d. £ s. d.
Prison 14 14 4 14 0 0
Borstal 17 4 11 14 9 3
Detention centre 17 14 2 14 0 5
Special hospital 20 4 4 24 8 3

Because of differences in the bases of calculation, these figures are not all directly comparable.

House adjourned at four minutes before nine o'clock.
