HC Deb 04 November 1968 vol 772 cc30-1W
Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he is aware of the manning situation in the Armed Forces Medical Services, due to poor recruiting, and premature retirements; and if he will make a statement on the future of these Services.

Mr. Reynolds

I am fully aware of the present serious situation I appreciate that the Medical Branches of the Armed Forces play, and must continue to play, an essential rêle in the efficiency and well being of the Services. I have just recently had full and helpful talks with the three Medical Directors General, and am well aware of the anxiety and uncertainties of Service doctors.

As my hon. Friend is aware, at the request of the Government the National Board for Prices and Incomes is engaged as a matter of urgency on a thorough review of the pay of Service doctors and dentists along with the other members of the Forces. I trust that my answer will give Service doctors confidence in their future and serve to reassure them, and potential recruits, that a really worthwhile career is still open to them.
