§ Mr. Biffenasked the Minister of Labour, if he has now been notified by the employers what percentage increase in rates and earnings is implied by the recent pay claim of the Merseyside tug-men; and if he will publish the figures and indicate if they are consistent with the Government's prices and incomes policy.
§ Mr. HattersleyI have been notified of a pay settlement for Liverpool tugmen effective from 1st March. This was not a straight percentage increase in rates, since payment for overtime continues to be based on the previous rates subject to special additions for Saturdays and Sundays. The increase in earnings is estimated to average 13½ per cent. The employers were informed that the Government noted the increases but did not propose to prevent payment.
