§ Mrs. HartThe payment of social benefits is the main purpose of my Department and about 60,000, that is about 98 per cent. of my officials, are employed on work contributing directly or indirectly to that purpose.

§ Mrs. HartIt is estimated that in the current financial year 1967–68, total expenditure on cash benefits for which I am responsible, excluding the cost of administration, will be of the order of £2,790 million. This represents about 96 per cent. of the total expenditure of my Department.
