§ 57 and 58. Mr. Kitsonasked the Minister of Health (1) if he is satisfied that the use of the drug chloramphenicol in animals is without risk of the appearance of resistance to this drug in the typhoid bacillus in man;
(2) if he will set up a committee to investigate the use of antibiotics in agriculture.
§ Mr. SnowNo cases have been reported in which the typhoid bacillus in man has proved resistant to chloramphenicol, but it is not possible to say that the use of chloramphenicol in animals is without risk of the development of such resistance. My right hon. Friend and my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food are currently making arrangements for the establishment of an Expert Body which will study the use of antibiotics generally in agriculture, and an announcement will be made as soon as possible.
