asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many secondary schools in England and Wales have remedial departments with a recognised head of department;

(2) how many secondary schools in Cardiff have remedial departments with a recognised head of department.

The figure for England and Wales is not available. There is one remedial department with a recognised head in a secondary school maintained by the Cardiff local education authority and the authority hopes to establish another such department shortly.
