§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government on what date he received an application from the Greater London Council to increase the travel expense mileage allowance of 7¾d. per mile for cars up to 1,200 cubic centimetres and 9¼d. for those above in compensation for the doubling of the road-tax fund, increases of 1s. 7d. per gallon on petrol, 1s. per pint on oil and other increases since the allowance was fixed in 1954; and what was the nature of his reply.
§ Mr. SkeffingtonThese rates, which apply to all local authorities in England and Wales, were fixed in 1962. The Greater London Council wrote to the Department seeking an increase on 29th March, 1968 and were told that, while the economic climate was unfavourable, the question would be considered if general representations were made putting forward a substantial case. This is still the position.
