HC Deb 03 July 1968 vol 767 c245W
Dr. Summerskill

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he is taking to discover children specially gifted in music while they are still young enough to be given full opportunities to develop their talents.

Miss Jennie Lee

There are 122 full-time and 18 part-time music advisers serving 128 authorities.

Local education authorities vary greatly in the importance given to the teaching and appreciation of music in schools. I have had a survey published, "Reports on Education No. 39—Music and the Young". One of its purposes is to inform educationists of what is being done in different parts of the country but there is as yet no general system ensuring that specially gifted children are suitably trained.
