Mr. John Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity (1) in how many cases have the salary increases of directors and staffs of merchant bankers operating in the United Kingdom been referred to the National Board for Prices and Incomes during the current financial year; what were the corresponding figures for 1966–67; if she will undertake to refer to the Board all such salary increases not yet so referred; and if she will make a statement;

(2) in how many cases have salary increases of foreign exchange dealers and their staffs operating in the City of London been referred to the National Board for Prices and Incomes during the current financial year; what were the corresponding figures for 1966–67; if she will undertake to refer all such increases not yet referred to the Board; and if she will make a statement.

Mrs. Castle

No cases involving the salaries of any of the categories mention have been referred to the Board. So far as a future reference is concerned I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave earlier today on the general question of the relationship of the highest levels of remuneration to the Government's policy.
