Mr. James Davidson

asked the Postmaster-General what were the total numbers of staff employed by his Department and its subsidiaries at the beginning of 1946, 1951, 1964 and at the latest available date.

The numbers were 290,000, 332,000, 387,000 and 422,000 in January, 1946, 1951, 1964 and December, 1967 respectively, including in each case about 23.000 sub-postmasters who are employed on an agency basis.

Since 1946 about 6¼ million new dwellings have been constructed; the correspondence posted has increased by 55 per cent., local telephone calls by 160 per cent., and trunk calls by 350 per cent.
