§ 55. Dame Irene Wardasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for reports from chief constables on the length of time taken by the police to prefer charges against defendants in magistrates' courts.
§ Mr. TaverneNo. Chief constables are well aware that delay should be avoided; but how soon a charge can be brought must depend on the circumstances of the particular case and I do not think that the statistics suggested would serve a useful purpose.
