§ 3. Mr. Longden
asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he is satisfied that the laws relating to the dumping of derelict cars and other jettisoned junk are now adequate to deal with offenders and as to the extent to which the methods of preventing and curing these offences are being utilised by local authorities; and if he will make a statement on this potential menace to road safety and rural amenity.
§ Mr. Skeffington
The Civic Amenities Act, 1967 provides for severe penalties for dumping unwanted vehicles and other rubbish and gives local authorities wide powers to arrange for removal and disposal, and to provide dumping sites. These provisions are complementary but the powers relating to abandoned vehicles did not become available to local authori-48W ties until 27th January this year, and they do not come under a duty to exercise them or to provide refuse dumps until next July.
