HC Deb 20 December 1968 vol 775 cc531-2W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Minister of Transport if he will give the estimated figures for road expenditure for 1968–69, 1969–70 and 1970–71 on the same basis as in Table IV of Appendix 2 of his Department's recent report entitled "Roads in England".

Mr. Marsh

For 1968–69 the estimated figures are:

From Central Funds 1968–69 From Local Authority Funds Total
£m £m. £m.
New Construction and Improvement
Trunk 131 131
Principal 82 48 130
Non—Principal 2 37 39
215 85 300
Maintenance
Trunk 17 17
Principal 1 25 26
Non—Principal 1 84 85
19 109 128
Combined Total 234 194 428

Detailed figures for 1969–70 will not be available until the Civil Estimates are published: but for comparison the total estimate is likely to be about £460 million. At this stage it is not possible to give a reliable figure for 1970–71.

Appendix 2 of "Roads in England" sets out the value of work done on roads. The figures quoted above are estimates of expenditure in the years concerned and relate to England only; comparable figures for Scotland and Wales are the responsibility of their respective Secretaries of State.
