§ Mr. Ron Lewisasked the Minister of Transport, how many road accidents of a serious nature during the past 12 months were attributable to excessive drinking.
Mr. Bob BrownIt is very seldom possible to attribute a particular accident to a single cause. We do know, however, that during the period 9th October, 1967 to 30th September, 1968, 5,006 drivers who were breath tested after being involved in an accident were found by subsequent blood tests to have a blood/alcohol level above 80 mg/100 ml or the urine equivalent. This figure does not, of course, include drivers who were killed, or who were not breath-tested because of their medical condition, or for other reasons.
