§ Mrs. Ewingasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications have been made by prisoners for parole to the latest convenient date; how many have been granted, and from which prisons; and whether the successful applicants have been released.
§ Mr. Elystan MorganUp to 31st October, recommendations by local review committees had been received in respect of 8,287 prisoners in England and Wales. This figure included 410 prisoners whose cases were under review for the second time, but excluded 788 prisoners who had declined to be considered for parole. Up to the same date the Parole Board 543W had recommended 981 prisoners for release on licence. Some 280 cases, with eligibility dates up to 1st February next, were awaiting reference to the Board. I accepted all the Board's recommendations, some of which provided for a deferred date on release.
