HC Deb 01 April 1968 vol 762 c48W
Mr. Swain

asked the Minister of Transport what estimates have been made of the financial loss to British Railways in 1970 and 1975 on the assumption that power stations burn North Sea gas in the summer instead of coal.

Mr. John Morris

As my hon. Friend knows, no decision has yet been taken about the use of natural gas in power stations. It is, therefore, too early to attempt to quantify the possible effects of such a policy on the Railways Board but, as with coal distribution more generally, the Railways Board will be kept in the picture so as to enable them to plan ahead on the best possible information.
