HC Deb 14 November 1967 vol 754 cc92-3W
Mr. Monro

asked the Minister of Labour if he will set up a training centre in Dumfriesshire, in view of the high rate of unemployment there.

Mr. Hattersley

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to his Question on 26th June.—[Vol. 749, c. 9.]

Mr. Monro

asked the Minister of Labour what was the number of mineworkers who have been retrained in Government training centres during the last 12 months.

Mr. Hattersley

This information is not readily available, since separate records of applications for training by men whose last employment was in the coalmining industry have been kept only since September of this year. A special count was made in Scotland, however, for the year 1966. During that year 141 ex-miners entered and 98 completed training in Government training centres in Scotland.

Mr. Monro

asked the Minister of Labour what plans he has to add to the number of Government training centres in Scotland.

Mr. Hattersley

With the opening of the Edinburgh Government Training Centre on 30th October, there are now eight such centres in Scotland. A ninth centre is expected to open at Bellshill (Glasgow) during the summer of 1968.
