§ 72. Mrs. Lena Jegerasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why, in calculating grants for students, account is taken of the pensions and allowances for widows and widowed mothers, while married women maintained by their husbands are regarded as having a nil income and are therefore eligible for full grants.
§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsA grant is made to a student to ensure that she is not prevented from following her studies by inability to maintain herself and her 51W dependants. A student with other income has less need for support from the grant; and the income, subject to certain deductions, is accordingly taken into account in assessing the amount of the grant. The income of a spouse is not counted for this purpose following a recommendation of the Anderson Committee.
