§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the Government's official estimates of food prices rising by 10 per cent. to 14 per cent. and the cost of living by 2½ per cent. to 3½ per cent. if Great Britain joins the Common Market, Her Majesty's Government will take steps to prepare for social welfare benefits to rise to cover these increases; and whether he will arrange for such preparations to proceed during the period when the negotiations are to take place with the European Economic Community.
