HC Deb 02 May 1967 vol 746 cc49-50W
Mr. Arnold Shaw

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether she is aware of the evidence for a link between the increased consumption of sugar with the growing incidence of coronary thrombosis; and whether he will support research in this field.

Mr. Crosland

In the last three years several scientific papers have been published suggesting that there may be a possible link between the consumption of sugar and the incidence of coronary thrombosis. A Medical Research Council working party is currently investigating this question and related studies are in progress in M.R.C. establishments and university departments. This work forms part of a wide programme of research into the causes and treatment of coronary thrombosis that is being supported from Government funds.
