HC Deb 02 March 1967 vol 742 c128W
34. Mr. Strauss

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will arrange that all antiquities of archaeological importance, even where the value is below £2,000, shall be submitted to the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art before their export is permitted.

Miss Jennie Lee

Special treatment of archaeological material in the manner suggested would depend on a satisfactory definition of such material for export control purposes. In its thirteenth report, covering the twelve months ending 30th June, 1966, the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art, reported that prolonged attempts to find such a definition had failed. That remains the position.
