§ Mr. Biggs-Davisonasked the President of the Board of Trade what is the estimated effect of a Channel Tunnel on the volume of air traffic from the London airports; and to what extent this was taken into account in deciding to place a third London airport at Stansted.
§ Mr. J. P. W. MallalieuIt is expected that the short haul cross-channel routes will be affected most by a Channel Tunnel, with substantial losses of traffic on the vehicle ferry services. No vehicle ferry services are operated from London airports. In total a Channel Tunnel may reduce London area traffic slightly and this was taken into account in considering the third London airport.
