Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is aware that the National Union of Teachers are to apply various types of sanctions in September in support of their campaign for better pay and conditions; and what action he proposes to take either by increasing salaries or other means to prevent these sanctions and the resultant difficulties to schoolchildren.
§ Mr. CroslandThe attitude of the National Union of Teachers to the Arbitral Body's recommendations on teachers' salaries is a matter for them. For my part, I am taking action to implement those recommendations in accordance with the Remuneration of Teachers Act, 1965.
§ Mr. William Hamiltonasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a further statement on the threat of the teachers to engage in sanctions against school meal duties and the use of unqualified teachers.
