HL Deb 26 July 1967 vol 285 cc1104-5WA
LORD BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

With regard to the 26,000 acres of Common Land, reported in the Official Review of Common Lands to be within the County of Surrey, whether they will state:

  1. (a) the number and area of commons defined as lying within urban or municipal authority areas;
  2. (b) how many and which of these have attracted restrictive orders since the passage of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (LORD KENNET)

The Royal Commission on Common Land, which reported in 1958, estimated that of 26,871 acres of common land in Surrey, 11,415 acres were wholly or partly within urban or municipal authority areas. The 11,415 acres are believed to comprise about 81 commons. Since 1949, the public rights of access on five of these (Fairmile Common, Epsom Common, Clay Hill Green, Merrow Downs and Walton Heath) have been made subject to Orders of Limitation under Section 193 of the Law of Property Act, 1925.
