§ 89. Mr. Hastingsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps he is taking to ensure the safety of British employees of Union Minière resident in the Congo; and whether he will raise their confinement by the Congolese Government at the United Nations as a threat to peace.
§ Mr. George ThomsonSo far no British subjects have been prevented from leaving the Congo. Her Majesty's Ambassador in Kinshasa has been instructed to seek an assurance that any British subject wishing to leave will be permitted to do so. I do not think that action at the United Nations would be appropriate at this stage.
