HC Deb 21 February 1967 vol 741 c241W
48. Mr. Pounder

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has for reducing the level of Purchase Tax currently being imposed on charity Christmas cards.

Mr. MacDermot

None. An exemption for Charity Christmas Cards would result in unfair competition with other Christmas cards which have to bear the tax.

51. Mr. John Hall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he has proposed that the present uplift on the printer's price for Christmas cards bought by charities should be increased from 50 per cent. to 75 per cent.

Mr. MacDermot

To ensure that Purchase Tax is charged on the value required by law, and to equate the tax on charity cards with that on cards sold through ordinary commercial channels.
