Mr. Victor Yates

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many boys awaiting transfer to Borstal establishments have been accommodated at Winson Green Prison, Birmingham, during the past two weeks.

Twenty at the beginning and end of the period (during which 17 were transferred to borstals and 17 received), rising to 30 on 6th February.

Mr. Victor Yates

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present population of Winson Green Prison, Birmingham; what is the highest number of prisoners accommodated at this prison during the past two weeks; and what action he is taking to overcome the present overcrowding.

Eight hundred and eighty-seven on 13th February 1967. The highest number in the past two weeks was 957. To relieve overcrowding, prisoners are being transferred to other establishments.
