§ Mr. Kershawasked the Minister of Social Security whether she is aware that her Department requires the production of marriage certificates to obtain certain allowances whereas Income Tax and other authorities generally do not, and that this practice causes expense and annoyance; whether she will co-ordinate her regulations with those of other Departments; and whether she will make a statement.
§ Miss HerbisonThe right to certain National Insurance benefits and increases 19W of benefit is conditional upon the satisfaction of conditions relating to the marriage of the claimant: and the best possible evidence is the marriage certificate. I do not think that the production of a certificate normally causes extra expense or annoyance, but if the hon. Gentleman has a particular case in mind I should be glad to have it looked into.
