HC Deb 21 December 1967 vol 756 cc524-5W
Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works whether it is the practice for his Department to require the appointment of the mechanical and electrical consultant or contractor at the design conception stage on a Government project to work in parallel with the architect, structural engineer, quantity surveyor and system contractor; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellish:

It is the practice of my Department to ensure that mechanical and electrical design is undertaken in step with other design elements from the outset. This design work may be undertaken by my Department's own professional engineers or by a specialist consultant. When the main erection contractor is selected early in order that he may contribute to the design stage, specialist M & E contractors will normally be appointed to join the team.
