§ 60. Mr. Deedesasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what revised estimate has been made of the number of probation officers required by the provisions of the Criminal Justice Act, 1967; and what steps he is taking to bring the strength of that service to the required level.
§ Mr. Callaghan:The target figure of 3,500 established officers by 1970 would 202W be sufficient. The present strength is just over 2,700, and about 360 students are expected to complete training and become available for appointment as probation officers by the end of 1968.
