§ Mr. Hornby
asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will state the number of applicants for undergraduate courses, and the number of available places in universities in Great Britain, at the beginning of the academic year 1967–68.
§ Mrs. Shirley Williams
Comprehensive information is not available. I am informed by the University Central Council on Admissions, however, that 101,600 candidates applied through them for admission to first degree and first diploma courses starting in October, 1967 in universities in the United Kingdom, and that the number of new admissions reported by all universities to the Council was approximately 56,250.
