88. Mr. Onslow

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what increase there has now been in the number of non-industrial civil servants since October 1964.

Mr. Harold Lever:

52,000, up to the 1st October.

89. Mr. Onslow

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what, in the month of October, 1964, was the total cost of the non-industrial Civil Service; and what it was in the month of October, 1967.

Mr. Harold Lever:

I estimate total wages and salaries of the non-industrial Civil Service, excluding the Post Office, at£425 million in 1964–65 and£540 million in the present financial year. Meaningful figures of total cost could not be made available without undue effort and expense.
