Mr. Malcolmn MacMillanasked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what progress has been made with the proposed vehicular ferry service at Eriskay;
(2) what progress is being made towards provision of a vehicle ferry service between Berneray Island and North Uist; what assistance he is offering towards the cost of the project; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RossThe Highland Transport Board recommended that a feasibility study should be made of types and costs of landing craft and terminals for vehicle-carrying services to islands such as Berneray and Eriskay. This study has now been completed, and I shall soon consult the Highlands and Islands Development Board and the county councils concerned about the findings. I am not yet able to say whether services of this kind will he introduced, or what assistance might be offered towards the cost.
