HC Deb 26 April 1967 vol 745 c307W
Sir C. Osborne

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many immigrant children are at school being taught English as a second language; and what is the approximate annual cost.

Mr. Denis Howell

7,700 immigrant pupils in maintained primary and secondary schools in January, 1966 were described as having no knowledge of English and 24,600 as having some English but needing further intensive teaching. Arrangements for teaching these children English vary considerably from area to area and I am unable to say what additional expenditure is being incurred by Local Education Authorities for this purpose.
