§ Mr. J. H. Osborn
asked the Minister of Transport what progress has been made with the construction of access roads to the M1 from Sheffield; what grants have been given to the local authorities for this purpose; and what progress has been made with the Sheffield Parkway and Rotherham by-pass access routes to the M1.

§ Mr. Swingler
The only access road to be constructed is the Sheffield Parkway and Rotherham Link Road; grant for this road has not yet been issued, but preparation is well advanced and construction work should start next year. There are no proposals for the improvement of the existing roads which will link Sheffield with the M1.

§ Mr. J. H. Osborn
asked the Minister of Transport when she now plans to open the northern section, from Nuttall to Pinxton, and the southern section to Hendon of the M1, London to Yorkshire motorway.

§ Mrs. Castle
The southern section to Hendon and the northern section from Nuthall as far as the Annesley junction with A608 will both be opened on 24th May.
The section from Annesley to the junction with A615 at Pinxton will be brought into use as soon as possible afterwards, probably during June.

asked the Minister of Transport if she will make a statement on progress on the construction of the M1 London to Yorkshire motorway, including the Sheffield-Leeds spur and the M18 extension to Doncaster tabulating for each section or major junction under 173W construction, the date the contract was placed, the name of contractor, value of contract and original quoted completion date, and any revised dates for completion given since placing the contract and

Reasons for delay:—

^{^*} Work was considerably delayed by bad weather during critical early stages of this contract. An extension would have been merited but the contractor succeeded in making up a lot of time and until a late stage seemed likely to achieve completion close to due date. An extension finally became necessary because of difficulty in properly carrying out finishing works during the winter months. The section to the Annesley junction with A.608 will be opened on 24th May and the remainder as soon as possible thereafter.

‡ A 7½ week extension has recently been allowed because of the combined effect of bad weather, extra works at culverts, and additional work in consolidating old mine workings.
