HC Deb 11 April 1967 vol 744 cc178-9W
Mr. Clegg

asked the Minister of Transport what reports she has received with regard to the organisation and running of motorway service areas; and whether she will make a statement.

Mrs. Castle

I have received no formal reports with regard to the operational organisation and running of motorway service areas.

I have however recently received from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College of London, a Report of its study, commissioned by my Department in 1965, into the design of service areas.

This study was concerned with the factors which determine the siting, size, layout and design requirements of service areas and the timing of their introduction: it was not concerned with day-to-day commercial organisation and running except in so far as these bear on the architectural concepts.

The Report, which contains a large amount of data, is now being examined in the Ministry, but the mass of detail accumulated in the two years of research will clearly require considerable detailed study and I cannot say when a further statement about it will be ready. A number of points made in the Report are however being put into effect as appropriate.
