Mr. Dalyell

asked the Minister of Technology (1) what he is doing to encourage the growth of micro-electronics in Central Scotland;

(2) what he is doing to encourage the development of semi-conductor integrated circuits in Great Britain;

(3) what steps he is taking to finance projects aimed at improving microelectronic technology.

My Department and the National Research Development Corporation are working together to assist the micro-electronics industry in Great Britain in its effort to become competitive in world markets. In particular, my Department is prepared to participate in the financing of worthwhile projects aimed at improving micro-electronic technology and is already examining some specific proposals from industry, including industry in Scotland.
