§ Mr. Whitakerasked the Minister of Transport how many of the 17 features recently announced as necessary for car 53W safety by the United States Government, details of which have been sent to her, are already compulsory for cars in this country; and whether she will take steps to ensure that new cars here in future include them all.
§ Mr. SwinglerThe United States Federal Government are about to propose general design features which may incorporate some of the twenty-six features now required of cars purchased for Federal use. Five of the most significant from the road safety point of view are covered by the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1963; the majority of the remainder are already to be found in most British built cars. We are keeping in touch with our manufacturers and the United States Government about their vehicle safety requirements generally so as to avoid conflicting standards.
