HC Deb 15 November 1966 vol 736 c68W
Mr. Mackintosh

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why drift-netting for salmon is permitted by licence in Northumberland but not allowed in the South-East of Scotland.

Mr. Hoy

The purpose of the restriction was to prevent a new development of drift-netting which was a potential threat to the salmon stocks. It was not, however, thought right to bring to an end the established drift-net fishing in Northumberland which is subject to strict licensing control by the River Authority.
