Railway Board's Annual Report for 1965. At the end of 1965 there were 10,896 miles of line carrying passenger services and 4,036 miles carrying freight only. With regard to the second part of the Question, particulars of the shape and size of the basic network will be published soon, as promised in the White Paper on Transport Policy (Cmnd. 3057).
