HC Deb 09 March 1966 vol 725 c556W
Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Postmaster-General what wavebands are available for use with walkie-talkie apparatus by the public.

Mr. Benn

The frequencies specified in the licences which I issue to the public for use of approved walkie-talkie apparatus are within the following ranges:

86.3 86.7 Mc/s
168.95 169.85 Mc/s
456 462.5 Mc/s

Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Postmaster-General what steps he takes to inform importers and owners of walkie-talkie equipment what wavelengths are available for the use of this apparatus.

Mr. Benn

It would not be practicable to keep importers informed about the characteristics, of which the operating frequency is one, required for wireless apparatus before its use can be licensed, but full information is given to anyone who inquires, whether he is an importer, a dealer or a prospective user.

To avoid any misunderstanding about which types of walkie-talkies can be licensed for use, and particularly about imported sets operating on frequencies around 27 Mc/s, my Department has explained the position to dealers known to be offering this kind of equipment for sale and also to the editors of certain technical and trade journals.
