HC Deb 09 March 1966 vol 725 cc570-1W
Dame Joan Vickers

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what action is being taken to improve the roads in Fiji, and in particular the 150 miles of highway between Nadi and Suva, with a view to making the island more attractive to tourists.

Mrs. White

During 1964 and 1965 the Fiji Government has spent some £Stg.645,000 on a comprehensive programme of road improvements throughout the territory.

As regards the Nadi-Suva road, the Fiji Government has decided that improvements are needed and are actively seeking means to finance a scheme which, it is estimated, will cost over £Stg.7 million.

In addition, arrangements have recently been made for a transport survey to be undertaken by a mission sponsored by the United Nations Special Fund.
