HC Deb 01 March 1966 vol 725 cc264-5W
Q15. Sir Knox Cunningham

asked the Prime Minister what contamination of the atmosphere arises from underground nuclear tests; and whether he discussed this matter on his visit to Moscow.

The Prime Minister

An underground nuclear test, properly conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Test Ban Treaty of 1963, will not result in any contamination of the atmosphere by radioactive debris. It is known that one test in the Soviet Union in January of last year did result in the release of a small amount of radioactive debris.

As to the second part of the hon. and learned Member's Question, I would refer him to the communiqué issued after my visit to Moscow.
