HC Deb 27 July 1966 vol 732 c275W
84. Mr. Kitson

asked the Secretary of State for Defence on how many occasions in the last 12 months aircraft have carried out low-flying exercises over the Wensleydale and Swaledale area; if it is intended to continue this practice; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Precise figures are not available. Low flying is an essential part of operational training. It is, however, strictly controlled and low flying routes have been carefully selected to cause the least possible overall disturbance to the general public, consistent with operational and safety requirements. It is not practicable completely to avoid all inhabited areas, and I very much regret he disturbance that may occur from time to time in the places to which the hon. Member refers.
