Mr. Walden

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what financial arrangements have been made with the Ruler of Sharjah for defence facilities required in Sharjah for British forces consequent upon redeployment in the Persian Gulf.

Mr. Healey

An Agreement has been reached with the Ruler of Sharjah on the provision of the necessary land and services for the deployment of British forces in Sharjah. In consideration of this Agreement, it has been agreed that Her Majesty's Government will pay to the Ruler of Sharjah the sum of £100,000 on 1st August, 1966, and an annual sum of f100,000 on 1st January each year, commencing on 1st January, 1967.

Parliament will be asked, in due course, to approve the necessary Supplementary Estimate. In the meantime, advances will be made as required from the Civil Contingencies Fund.
