§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) to what extent during the past 15 years, either prior to or during negotiations with the world bankers for loans and credits to strengthen the £ sterling, the British Government discussed the granting of loans or credits from the Soviet Government ; and how Soviet terms compared with those offered and subsequently accepted from the international bankers of the West; 56W (2) to what extent, when approaching world bankers for loans and other aid to strengthen the £sterling, such approaches included discussions with the Soviet Government for loans of gold, and with what results ; and whether he will take action along these lines before again seeking to obtain credits from the world bankers, or increasing the restrictions and credit squeeze.
