HC Deb 19 July 1966 vol 732 cc81-2W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Minister of Transport if she will give the total number of accidents and deaths that occurred in the last three years on the A6 between Carlisle and Penrith, and on the A74 from Carlisle to the boundary ; what representations have been made to her: and, in the interests of safety, what action she proposes to take to halt this increase in road accidents.

Mr. John Morris

The details requested are as follows:

A6 Carlisle Penrith (15 miles) A74 Carlisle-Scottish border (6 miles)
Accidents Deaths Accidents Deaths
1963 87 6 47 2
1964 115 2 48 2
1965 129 8 50 7

My right hon. Friend has received no recent representations. While she is very concerned about these accidents, improvement of conditions must await the planned extension of the M6 past Carlisle and dualling of A74, as all practicable

interim measures have already been carried out.
